Learning What Gluten Is and How to Begin Eating Gluten Free

Eating gluten free can be a difficult task for anyone. There are a seemingly endless amount of things to remember when trying to pick your next meal, and if you accidentally eat something that has gluten in it then you could be in for a rough next few hours. This article is here to help the average person find the first few steps in order to start their diet without gluten. There are just a few things that need to be done in order to ensure your gluten free safety, but are you finding yourself asking what exactly is gluten?
First lets discuss what gluten actually is. Gluten is a small protein that is commonly found in wheat, barley and rye. What this protein does is essentially make all of your favorite foods have a sticky and doughy texture to them. The problem is, for many people gluten elicits some type of immune response and can cause serious bodily harm to your intestines. Due to this fact it is important for persons like myself to avoid eating gluten at all costs, and I am here to help you do the same!
To avoid eating gluten, it is important to first realize all of the foods that you now need to avoid in order to safely eat your meals. The largest category of foods to avoid is breads and pastas. This is a very large group of foods to avoid, including: pizza, rolls, all sandwich breads, donuts, spaghetti noodles and all of your other favorite breaded foods. These are the obvious foods to cut out of your diet. It is also important to know that wheat is a commonly used filler in many sauces, especially soy sauce. Before you purchase anything at the grocery store make sure to properly read any labels and check for the ingredients. Obviously, it is best if the product says gluten-free on it, but if it does not make sure to look for wheat, barley and rye.
The best course of action is to buy fruits, vegetables and meats. If you can make a diet that is centered on these three food groups then you are on a great path for success. Also, it is important to avoid cross contamination. This is where a non-gluten containing food comes in contact with a gluten containing food and now you cannot eat your previously gluten free meal. This is done by having a gluten free section in your home and making sure to properly clean everything before and after eating. Just doing this and reading the labels before you buy food can change your life.
Hopefully these tips can help your path to eating gluten free!
