Leg Pain Suffers In Coquitlam, Find Relief Through Chiropractic Therapy

By Ted Strothers

While leg pain may result from many different causes, sciatica is one of the more common ones. This condition results in compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve. When patients experience sciatica, they often find help in a Coquitlam Chiropractor Office.

The sciatic nerve is made of five smaller nerves that exit the spinal column in different locations before joining to form the largest nerve in the body. It is routed through the hip, pelvis and leg. Smaller nerves branch off the main stem to serve the thigh, calf, knee, foot and toes.

Sciatica is responsible for several types of discomfort. Some sufferers experience shooting pain affecting the length of the leg. Others feel a dull ache or numbness affecting the limb. Sometimes, the sufferer's actions make the pain worse. For example sitting or standing in the same position for an extended time may cause a flare of pain. Activities involving twisting, such as playing golf or tennis may also increase one's pain.

The length of the sciatic leaves many places where the irritation can happen. The lower back is one of these places. If a lumbar vertebra is misaligned, it may cause pain. Chiropractors call the misalignment a subluxation.

Herniated discs also may result in irritation of the nerve. These cartilage structures normally provide shock absorption and allow the individual to bend or turn. However, injuries from falls or car wrecks can cause them to bulge placing pressure on nerves.

Sciatica often begins as a sharp pain in the sufferer's lower back. The pain may slowly spread down the back of the individual's leg. The longer one remains in the same position, the worse the pain often becomes.

Medical doctors often provide pain medication for this condition. However, the medication does not address the underlying condition. Chiropractic offers a medication free approach that addresses conditions that cause leg pain, including sciatica at their source.
