When Are Porcelain Veneers Right For You?

By Harry Izzo

Not surprisingly more people prefer dental procedures that are natural looking. For instance, more people today prefer invisible braces over metal braces. Metal braces are uncomfortable and keep you from smiling in front of others. On the other hand, porcelain veneers make your smile look natural.

However, just like invisible braces, veneers are not for everyone. You will want to consult with your dentist in order to decide if this procedure fits your situation.

The key is to have healthy teeth from the very start. If they are not healthy your dentist has to fix them before veneers can be applied. The reason for this is that veneers need to attach to healthy teeth in order for the procedure to be successful.

Chipped or cracked teeth are easily covered over with veneers. Smoke stains also are easily concealed by these thin shells. For smokers, rather worrying about the stains, why not just cover over the problem permanently with porcelain veneers. So long as a tooth is healthy then it doesn't matter if it is chipped, cracked or stained. Veneers easily attach to any healthy tooth.

On the other hand the veneers can last up to 10 years before you need to replace them, so in the long run they are not such a bad investment. The veneers are bonded where the enamel should be. They are permanent so once you undergo the procedure there is no going back. They are not like dentures or invisible braces that can be removed whenever you want. The veneers are only removed at replacement time.

People with bad habits might not enjoy having veneers. If you are the kind of person that chews their soda ice then you are bound to damage these delicate veneers. Chewing ice is probably how you damaged your teeth in the first place. Unless you break the habit, you are likely to damage your veneers as well. The veneers are thin shells bonded to the enamel of your teeth and any grinding should be avoided.

If you do not grind your teeth, or if you can break the habit of grinding them, then the veneer procedure is highly recommended for you. Make an appointment with your local dentist and he'll improve your smile with this procedure.
