Interview With Stephanie Betsch CEO On Her Whole Body Transformation

Q. What are your biggest struggles with weight loss?
A. Currently I still struggle driving past fast food restaurants. I have days where I can drive by and think that I feel sorry for those lined up to get poison, and other days where all I want is a little dose of that happiness. But then I have to remember, exercise brings me that happiness. Feeling awake and aware and healthy makes me excited. I do have temporary moments of weakness where I think about going back to the unhealthy ways of eating and think that road is easier. But what is it "easier" to? Sickness, disease, embarrassment, lack of energy and confidence to do things with my boys, death? I know I will probably struggle with it for a long time. But I decided to deal with it.
Q. What was your wake up call?
A. My wake up call came out of desperation to lose weight. After over 60 attempts in 15 years to be "skinny", I needed to examine why I couldn't stick to a "diet". I discovered that I was in deed addicted to food. I was using it for my temporary "fix" multiple times a day. When I ate, my world was numb. Nothing mattered. And if I picked all the right sugary salty foods, my world was happy for five minutes. I realized this addiction was bigger than me and that I needed help. Most addicts who recover from addictions seek a rehab. I couldn't find one for an affordable price coming from an average family, so instead... I made one.
Q. What was your food like (or still is when you fall off the wagon)?
A. Oh, this might blow your mind. Well, in a completely honest world, the world I am trying to now live in now, my eating could be classified as disgusting. I was honestly addicted to fast food. Weekdays I would drop my kids off at school and get a bacon and egg and a sausage and egg mcmuffin from the good old golden arches. Throughout the day I would get 2-3 large double doubles, and in between this, I was eating all processed foods. I would make easy dinners from frozen in a box, to the oven. Add some sidekick noodles or minute rice and we were good to go (but not really). I disliked any vegetables, and fruit was never something I reached for. On top of that I would go once a week to all you can eat sushi and once a week out with my girlfriends for "wing night". It has been almost 90 days and I haven't "fallen off the wagon". I am allowed a cheat day per week on Sundays ~ I love Sundays! However, they are strategic, and needed in order to prevent plateaus. I tend to reach for chocolates more then anything. I usually just eat whatever is in the house. If I go out for my cheat meal, I head to sushi since is still a healthier option.
Q. What is your fitness like?
A. Well I can tell you that my biggest concern was working out. Our driveway alone takes maybe 30 seconds to walk up and I would need to stop a couple times. I was completely out of breath. Now I run it 10 times, and I hike 5km up a mountain a couple times a week. Not to mention my trainer has me doing things I never ever would have imagined me being able to do. Because she doesn't except the words "I can't" from me. She believed in me when I didn't believe in myself. I'm pretty proud.
Q. What is your payoff?
A. Well I got into this to address a real concern for millions of Canadians (and our American friends too). Food addiction is something most people will never admit to. But when they do, it is a powerful moment when they can finally see the answer, and I want to be there every step of the way. My payoff? The health benefits of cardio exercise are well-known and general exercise is highly recommended by doctors to help alleviate a number of conditions. Benefits include:
  • the added circulation of blood needed during this type of exercise, your heart will be stronger and your body's ability to handle heavier activities will increase

Types of Cardio Exercise

As a general rule, this type of exercise will not increase your heart rate as high and are generally classed as a slower paced workout. These are good for older individuals, people who are overweight or new to exercise and those recovering from injury.
High Impact - As the name suggests, you will put a strain on your body from plyometric exercises - forcing your body off the ground in a jumping motion. Activities include jogging, running, skipping and bounding like during an aerobics class. Impact is not bad for you unless it is done improperly. Good technique is essential to avoid joint damage. Research has shown that it can help to build bone density which can prevent or delay osteoporosis.
Workout Session Details
The American College of Sports Medicine recommends a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate cardio exercise five days a week. If high intensity is your thing, do 20 minutes three days a week. For those looking to lose weight or to increase their fitness level, 30-60 minutes of moderate to high intensity activity five days a week would be better.
To help prevent injury, always warm up with a light jog and some dynamic stretching. A cool down involving a light jog and stretching will help to lower your heart rate and temperature and flush out lactic acid.
Deciding how hard to workout can be tough but a simple formula can be used to find your training zone. The most recommended training zone is 60-85% of your maximum heart rate. To calculate your range, use 220 - your age and multiply by 0.60 and 0.85 to get the lower and upper limits. For example, a 40 year-old person would have a heart rate training zone of 117 - 244 beats per minute.
While you doing cardio are exercise, take your heart rate by feeling the inside of your wrist or neck for 15 seconds and multiply by 4. Some sports watches have a heart rate monitor built-in to make it easier.
Regardless of the type of cardio exercise you choose, do it regularly and within your training zone to get the maximum benefit. A good training routine paired with an excellent diet will help you live a long and healthy life.

Why, Why, Why - Run!

I was talking with one of my friends about goals, and the process we all go through, but so many struggle to succeed. She felt that one of the reasons there were so many failures was because people did not define the why. They did not really boil it down to what is really motivating them, and it is usually not what you think. Usually you have to ask why a couple of times before you come up with a real answer.
I usually hate the whole real answer process. It usually takes me a couple of days or weeks to really come up with a real answer.
I will take you through some of the process.
Why do I want to complete a marathon?
It will prove that I can.
Why is proving that I can important?
To show others the things that I can accomplish.
Why is that important?
Validation. This is not a good reason. This is looking for external acceptance of others, but a real goal will create a positive internal emotion.
This is one of those dead ends that I talked about that frustrate me, but I still feel a drive to push for the goal of a marathon, so there must be more reasons.

A marathon stands for power over my body, to choose wisely what I eat. Control of my agency to choose to work out rather than sit on the couch and watch TV, or to sleep in that extra time. It gives me a sense of fulfillment knowing that this was me that had the focus, dedication, the persistence. I did the research on running form, nutrition, and injury. I saved up for the tools that I need to run a marathon. I am an amazing person, and I am someone who is proud of who I am.
Power, agency, and fulfillment, these are all deeply rooted necessities of life. They create a real connection to the goal. You will need this type of connection in order to really stick with your goal, and with this conviction you can really achieve anything.

Weight and physical health are individual matters. Popular diet and exercise programs (think of the Atkins diet, the South Beach diet, and other big-name solutions) usually apply drastic strategies and try to sell them to the most possible people. Well, these strategies just can't work for everyone. Each of us has a different life, with different activities and stresses, and therefore with different demands on our bodies.
Someone training to run a marathon, for example, could not afford to go on the Atkins diet-it would rob her of the carbohydrates needed to fuel her training. Someone who spends eight hours a day seated in an office with want to eat fewer carbs and calories, but still make sure to get enough nutrition. We need to balance activity with food intake-when you expend energy, you'll need to replace it with calories and carbs. This a more adaptive, personal approach than a strict diet plan. There are all kinds of factors in a person's life, and a ton of ways to balance them out for optimal health. At the beginning of this issue, we introduced you to the CRAFT model, which is a tool for thinking about life balance. CRAFT comes in handy when thinking about weight. If you're thinking about changing your diet or your fitness program, don't look to for big, famous programs. Look at your life. Look at your context and circumstances, and determine from there what behaviors you should change, and how to change them.
It's about balance. Fad diets appeal to us by advertising huge cuts in carbs or calories. Flashy exercise programs emphasize intense workout routines and long sessions at the gym to attain ripped beach bodies. Dieting and exercise are of course great ways to get healthy-but we just need to keep them balanced. And that balance depends on you. You have got to consider your own metabolism. You have got to consider your own health conditions and family history. And you have also got to consider your priorities, your activities, and how you want to spend your time. Do you want to sacrifice hours from your social life, or from your work, to be at the gym?
Maybe you do-maybe exercising is a huge priority for you, and is something you derive enjoyment from. But know that the choice is yours, and that there are other ways to get healthy without adopting massive, strict programs that force you to decide between health and other parts of your life. You can work healthy habits into your existing routine. As a writer and editor, I spend a lot of time in front of the computer screen. My life is sedentary, and consists of long days and nights writing, editing, and poring over research. I don't follow a strict diet, and I don't have the time, or the desire, to hit the gym for an hour or two each day. But I practice healthy habits. I drink water constantly. I eat nuts, dried fruit, and baby carrots while I work. I take breaks to go on mind-clearing walks; when I have more time, I'll take a long bike ride. Because I don't do too much hard exercise, I try not to overeat, and try to avoid junk food. I eat based on the energy I need, and let my activities and routine dictate my calorie intake rather than sticking to a strict daily limit. I don't have a strict mindset, but I do have flexible habits that respond to my priorities, desires, and needs. Everyone can achieve this-it just takes a little thought.
