Four Ways to Solve Neck Pain

Dealing with neck pain can be, well, a pain in the neck. A stiff neck can be very uncomfortable. It can cause problems at work and while sleeping, interfering with daily life.
Neck pain can be caused by a variety of factors. Although it is sometimes caused by an injury or medical condition, it is typically caused by tension and poor posture. The neck is composed of an intricate structure and it moved more than any other body part, so you can imagine how any type of stress can cause pain.
Fortunately, there are ways to relieve neck pain in the comfort of your own home. Try some of these tricks to keep pain at bay. Perhaps you will also learn some new habits as well to prevent neck pain from occurring.
Massage
Most cases of neck pain are caused by tense muscles. Therefore, a relaxing massage can provide much-needed relief. You don't have to spend $100 or more on a professional massage. You can do it in the comfort of your own home, either on your own or with a partner's assistance.
The first step is to relax the muscles with heat. A hot shower or bath will accomplish this. Next, using the fingers, massage the shoulders and neck. Use circular motions and apply pressure gently. The next step is to use long strokes and apply them downward. This time, the pressure should be firmer. A good 10-15 minute massage will work wonders for neck pain.
Heat and Ice
Heat is an effective pain reliever because it loosens stiff muscles through increased circulation. You can stand in the shower for a few minutes or use a towel to apply heat to the neck. However, too much heat can actually make neck pain worse, so don't do overboard.
After applying heat, a good idea is to ice the area. Ice is effective at reducing swelling and numbing the pain. You can use an ice pack or plastic bag filled with ice and apply it to the neck for 15 minutes.
Do Neck Exercises
Exercises are good for not only relieving pain, but preventing neck pain from recurring. Stretch the neck's muscles by performing exercises that help increase the range of motion. First, sit down and turn your head to the right as far as possible without injuring yourself. Hold that position for a few seconds and then return your neck to the center. Repeat this procedure but turn to the left this time. Now go up and down. Put your head down and touch your chin to your chest. Hold the position and bring your head back up. Next, tilt your head toward your right shoulder, hold it and return to the center. Do the same for the left shoulder.
Use Memory Foam Pillows
Sometimes neck pain can be alleviated by simply using the right pillow. Memory foam pillows work well because they offer neck and spine support.
