On the Wait List for Weight Loss Surgery in Canada?

Obesity is classified as a chronic illness - so yes, it merits being treated with the same dedication and speed as heart disease, cancer, diabetes... after all it is a precursor to every one of our killers. The concept of "Benign Obesity" is a myth - according to a December 2013 study which followed 61,000 participants over an 11 year period, even with no outward signs of metabolic syndrome, people are obese people are still at a 24% higher risk of premature death. Fact is, bariatric surgery is the #1 sustainable form of fat loss from obesity. In other words, weight loss surgery has the highest cure rate for obesity.
Unfortunately, our bariatric procedures offered in Canada, and many countries are older and are ridden with more potential risks, and also have a much greater encumbrance on future lifestyle than available elsewhere.
Mexico is at the leading edge of weight loss surgeries. It is also the birth place of bariatric surgery. Obviously, as anywhere, not all facilities offer the same procedures, equivalent health outcomes, so research is still very necessary as to the particular chosen facility. With great thanks to the melodrama of the media, there is a fear for some of going to Mexico for surgery. Let me share a number of facts:
There is a weight loss surgery hospital in Mexico that is the only facility outside the United States to be designated as an International Center of Excellence.
The Cost of surgery is less than half of surgeries in Canada
Procedures are available in Mexico that are NOT offered in Canada, that have the lowest possible risks, and least impact on future quality of life. Again, research into individual facilities is a must
The lowest rate of complications, comes from facilities in Mexico, Not Canada or the United States
Canadian private facilities are lacking in preoperative screening, lifestyle support & critical care facilities.
According to the Medical Tourism Association, the Mexican state of Baja California has over 450,000 people every year seeking major medical treatment
According to the Baja Secretary of Tourism, half a million people cross the border monthly for doctor and dental visits.
According to the CDC Mexico is the second most common destination for Medical Tourism
Ongoing research, training of bariatric surgeons worldwide, is still led by Mexican surgeons.
Again, there are facilities there that are less honourable than others - just as in the United States and Canada. Obesity surgery saves lives, and the horror stories happily publicized in the media are not the norm. Do your research, check out individual facilities and their success rates, and the individual procedures & the success rates of the surgeons. Unfortunately generalizations are ridden with myths. Believing these myths will compromise your health & enjoyment of life.
