Turmeric Supplements - Making The Big Decision

By Joi Mulloy

If you've ever heard about the spice called turmeric, the first thing that you would probably think is that it is used in making curry-based dishes. While this plant is highly valued for its culinary use, its medicinal value is also excellent, particularly when its roots are extracted to produce a substance called curcumin. Before you buy turmeric supplement, there are some things you may need to consider first.

Any quality turmeric supplement will contain curcumin and this substance can make an excellent weapon against inflammation and it even comes with anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-cancer properties. Recent lab tests show that curcumin can be used to take on many types of diseases such as Alzheimer's, gallstones, arthritis, stomach ulcers, and the like.

Before you go out to buy turmeric supplements being sold in the market, you may want to check the label first to ensure that it actually contains curcumin. You should also check how much curcumin it contains - higher percentage means better. There are some products that contains as much as 95% curcumin which can be an effective ally on the battle against cancer-causing free radicals.

Some product labels are made confusing by manufacturers in an attempt to lure customers into buying low-quality products or cause confusion regarding its actual content. You should look into the dosage of the product and check how much milligrams of curcumin there is for each capsule. For example, some products may offer 1000mg of curcumin per serving, but you need to take 4 capsules for that.

In order to make sure you buy turmeric supplement that has exceptional quality, it must not contain any fillers or extenders that dilute the efficacy of its curcumin content. An ideal supplement will not have any kind of additives, artificial colorings, preservatives, and sweeteners. Also, don't be hooked in by overboard claims regarding a products efficacy - if it's too good to be true, it probably is.

The only catch about curcumin, according to experts, is that it doesn't get absorbed easily into the bloodstream when it is taken orally. To solve this problem, some manufacturers decided to make use of an additive called piperine. While it is not in itself a threat, there are still some possibilities of experiencing serious repercussions for people who are under medications or those that have specific medical conditions.

Another important consideration before you buy turmeric supplement is that it must be manufactured by a certified organic producer. This manufacturer should also be committed to quality and excellence in their manufacturing processes. Make sure to check if the product has been certified by organizations such as GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) and HACCP (Hazards and Critical Control Points).

Also, if you want to stay of the safe side, you must buy turmeric supplement exclusively from manufacturers that are already well-known. These manufacturers are usually in the business for many years already and have earned a loyal following with their quality products. Of course you can do some researching yourself to find out more about a supplement, particularly by reading reviews made by previous consumers.
