Is Cancer Becoming More Treatable?

In Hampshire at present the current mortality rate for individuals suffering from Cancer is 155.6 people per 100,000 diagnosed. This at present is marginally better that the average in England which currently stands at 172 per 100,000. This shows that survival rates are slightly higher in Hampshire at 69.9% in comparison to the English national average of 67.7%. However the survival rates in England are comparatively lower than the rest of Europe, so there is room for improvement. The government's target is to reduce deaths caused as a result of Cancer by 5000 per year by 2015.
At present in America one in four deaths is the result of Cancer. However this number has improved greatly since the 1990's, and this number is continually declining. There are an estimated 1.6 million new cases of Cancer diagnosed in America each year, and it is estimated that from this 0.58 million, 350 individuals will die, a cancer survival rate of 63.7%.
Life Expectancies
Life expectancy for an individual can vary greatly as a result of a number of factors which include: the type of Cancer, the stage of the Cancer when first diagnosed, the traits of the Cancer, the treatment received, and an individual's own physical and emotional health.
What New Treatments Are Coming?
There are a variety of new Cancer treatments that are being produced at present. For example Scotland had recently become the first place in UK to approve two new Cancer drugs for routine use on the NHS. These drugs are Enzalutamide and Axitinib. Enzalutamide is a drug that could extend the life of men suffering with advanced Prostate Cancer, and Axitinib could potentially help Kidney Cancer Patients whose disease has spread.
There have also been a variety of other treatments that scientists have been working on. For example scientists have been working on using stem cells to treat colon cancer. There are also a variety of immunotherapies (using the immune system to treat Cancer) being tested for the treatment of Melanoma.
Home Care And Cancer
Implementing a Home Care package may be helpful for someone who is battling Cancer. This is because a care worker will be able to provide support with all areas of daily life including: helping with personal care, medication management, meal preparation and domestic duties. This can be extremely helpful, as it can allow the individual the opportunity to concentrate on getting well again, or doing things that they enjoy doing. In extreme cases palliative care packages can be implemented in order to assist people in the end stages of the illness, and help to ensure that they are as comfortable as possible.
The success rates of treating Cancer are increasing rapidly as scientific advancements are made, this means that individuals who are diagnosed early may be approaching a time where the diagnosis of Cancer may be nothing to fear, as death rates from most types of Cancer are continually declining.
