The emotional drains of everyday life - the boss, deadlines, paying bills, failing to make a personal goal(s), family members, overtraining at the gym. Add to that you have a World in turmoil that is now at your finger tips by the click of a mouse or press of a smartphone ap, it's overwhelming for even someone as tough as The Terminator (a robot from the future) Hans Sayle, in his 1978 book The Stress Of Life, wrote 'that a breakdown in tolerance of stress can occur as often from a sudden increase in anxiety as from an increase in physical distress'. When the body's exposed to stress, studies show the brain triggers the release of stress hormones such as adrenaline, cortisol, and norepinephrine. The body prepares for this whether the stress, is a physical or emotional one. When this happens, non-essential systems in the body are slowed down or switched off including the digestive system, the immune system, and the reproductive system. Some of the effects stress can cause are:
- Headaches
- Pain and tension in the back, neck, and shoulders
- Weight Gain
- Restlessness, Insomnia, and other sleep disorders
- Problems with memory and concentration
- Nausea
- Indigestion
- Diarrhea or constipation
- High blood pressure
- Heart Disease
- Diabetes
I think it's safe to say no one wants to have any of the above. While some degree of stress, whether physical, mental, or emotional may be unavoidable and a part of normal life, but finding ways to keep from suffering harmful overloads of stress that are too great in both duration and frequency is important.
Here are some ways to decrease stress from your everyday life-
- Avoid watching, reading or listening to the news before bed at night or first thing when you get up in the morning. Filling your head with a bunch of negative stories that you have no control over benefits you how? It doesn't. Instead, listen to something that makes you laugh or read an inspirational book that puts a smile on your face and love in your heart. Think of all the things you are thankful for every morning - life, your health, family, whatever comes to your mind.
- At night avoid reality TV crap. The only reality TV I watch is sports. If you are alone and bored at night, try learning a musical instrument. I started playing guitar at 35. I'm definitely not Jimmy Page but I get great enjoyment out of playing. If music is not your thing, you can learn painting/drawing, writing, sculpting, a new language, the possibilities are endless in today's world to learn something new right from your home.
- Meditate, even if it's only ten or 15 minutes per day. Don't know how? Put meditation techniques in YouTube, you'll find more than enough to get started.
- Exercise - even if you only have 20 minutes, you need to exercise your body. Not only for physical reasons but it will help you mentally take the edge off.
- Try hard to get 8 hours of sleep a night. Make sure your bedroom is dark and you have a comfortable bed. I would suggest buying silk pillow cases, studies show they help relieving any allergies plus they feel real good. Can't sleep, read a book, not off a computer! The light will keep you awake. Try a book about self-improvement Dr.Wayne Dyer is one of my favorites. Avoid reading work or anything that will cause you discomfort
- In the heat of the moment, when you feel anxious or upset, find yourself thinking negative thoughts, whatever, close your eyes and pray. You will be amazed at how a quick prayer will ease your tension. I have two I use personally - "Jesus, I believe in and accept you" and "The will of God will never take me where the grace of God will not protect me".
Remember nobody gets through life without trauma or having feelings of guilt. Think of them as character builders, attack them with an optimistic attitude and loving heart, you will not only feel better, you will have much more energy. Put away fear and worry and find joy.
