Reinvent Yourself In 2014

At some this time in 2014, it's likely that you will have to contemplate reinventing yourself. Reinvention could be brought on for a number of reasons - changing jobs, becoming an empty-nester, seeking new challenges, and so on. Two main alternatives are open to you to consider. One of those is to do nothing. The other alternative is to reinvent yourself. And when this opportunity to reinvent yourself arises, it's important that you take time to consider the many options available to you.
One of your first, and most important, tasks is letting go of the 'old'. And a key aspect of that is coming to grips with how much you'll be missed. Here, then, is a quick, 5-step exercise that will help you to understand just how much you'll be missed when you decide to change directions.
  1. Fill a bucket with water.
  2. Plunge one arm into the water.
  3. Wait for the water to settle.
  4. Withdraw your arm from the water.
  5. Observe the result. Chances are there'll be a few circular waves as if a stone is tossed into a pond. In a very short time, the water will settle down and the surface will return to how it was before.
The exercise is a reminder how much you'll be missed if, and when, you decide to change. And that change could be as chairman of the board, secretary of the body corporate, captain of the Tiddlywinks team, moving out of home, exiting this earth, divorcing a lifestyle or person, or whatever.
As Tony De Mello said, 'That's the way life is'. Or, when Robert Frost was asked in the twilight years of his life what he'd learned from life, he said he could answer that question in three words, 'It goes on'.
Your next steps are for you to take. There's plenty of help available. One source is mentioned below. Whether or not you accept the offer being made, there are four main steps to consider. Each step requires specific actions.
  1. Assessing the situation
  2. Exploring your options
  3. Developing yourself
  4. Building your skills
As Roger Federer said to Pete Sampras, 'The ball is in your court'.
Frost's words of wisdom and the offer outlined below could be worth holding onto in 2014.
