Family Rituals Can Familiarize The Unfamiliar

By Mark Chapman

There are traditions in every family. Even if they're not readily apparent, there are certain habits that families participate in that give them their identity. Many families recognize and actively keep these traditions alive, seeing the benefits that they can give the family unit, including bringing everyone closer together. There are certain stressful times, including transitioning into a new home, where traditions can bring in a level of comfort and familiarity, often helping the family to get acclimated to the new house.

Family rituals are often simple in nature. They don't have to be big, thoughtfully-planned venture. They can be as simple as pleasant dinner-table conversations, or one night a week planned for the family to share in an activity together. Changes in life often come hard and fast, and in these times, having an established set of traditions to fall back into can be a big comfort and a good way to keep the family together and united. But what if your family doesn't have any noticeable traditions? Simply, you can make some! Here are some good suggestions to start.

Camping: Many of the more "outdoorsy" families thoroughly enjoy taking a weekend to head up to the mountains and rough it (or at least, enjoy the outdoors with the comfort of a camper). Spending time together on trips like these can really strengthen family bonds, and create many pleasant memories.

Sporting Events: Many families enjoy attending a good sporting event. If they can afford it, many get season tickets, and closely follow the season's progression. Attending these events as a family can be a lot of fun. Some families also participate in the same fantasy football league. Yearly activities like this can be great fun for the whole family.

You will likely find yourself recalling many fond memories later on down the line, many of them likely the result of family traditions. Traditions are a means to an end, and that end is a closer bond with the family and thousands of fondly-remembered experiences.
