How To Choose The Best Moustache Wax

By Roseann Hudson

Like many fashion statements, facial hair styles follow cycles. Beard thickness and length change, but throughout history the moustache in all its forms has prevailed. Wearers today are ditching the three-day-growth look in favor of more generous styles that are often worn several inches long. For many men, the best moustache wax helps complete that look by keeping the ends neat and tidy.

Although facial hair reached a zenith during the late 19th century, men today still need a sensible hair care product that helps nurture and control that growth. The hair sprouting from the lower half of the face may be curly, thick, and even a noticeably different color. Many adult men that have very few remaining follicles on top can grow enviably luxuriant beards.

While rapid growth can be an advantage, the reality of wearing a big moustache hits at mealtimes. To avoid being offensive to others while eating, the hair must constantly be re-parted or swiped with a napkin to remove bits of food or droplets of moisture, and biting down on a wayward strand is an unpleasant sensation. The solution is simple, and refreshingly low-tech.

Instead of adopting existing hair-care products such as gels or sprays that may contain irritants to the upper lip, most men find that a product popular in earlier eras actually works better than any modern aerosol. Although formulas may vary according to the manufacturer, the majority are made from beeswax, which is by nature organic. The wax may contain oils, emollients, or stabilizers.

The product is commonly marketed in small tubes or tubs, or in stick form. There are degrees of holding power appropriate to whatever style is being trained. If the hair is relatively pliant or thinner, a soft wax may be the perfect grooming aid. It helps keep the ends from sagging, is not glaringly obvious to casual observers, and prevents the wild, unkempt look of a growing work in progress.

When a more substantial medium is needed, thicker varieties work best. These products help prevent highly stylized hair from separating or drooping unattractively, and make touch-ups are easy, even without a mirror. It is extremely important to choose a color tone that matches skin and complexion. A coal black mustache planted firmly on an elderly face looks startlingly out of place.

With the right tools, application is trouble-free and easy. Most are packaged with a small comb that spreads the colored wax quickly and easily without creating darker spots. Big moustaches may require using wax removal products to prevent damage or discomfort during cleanup. Other than sharp scissors for trimming or a hair dryer for softening cold wax, there is no other investment needed.

While some contain petroleum derivatives, most people prefer a more natural list of ingredients. There is a surprising amount of variety, including compounds containing no soy derivatives, or vegan waxes that contain no animal or insect components. For novices who want a little instruction prior to making a public appearance, there are video demonstrations widely available on line.
