Try Out These Stellar Home Security Tips

By Johnathan Black

It is a homeowner's responsibility to keep their home secure. While you may think the only thing you have to do is get an alarm system put into your home, there are a lot of other things that can be done. The following article will give you some great ideas to help you secure your home and everything inside of it.

Get to know your neighbors. Your neighbors are a valuable resource that can help keep an eye on your home when you cannot. When neighbors watch out for each other, you can be alerted if anything suspicious is occurring. Keep an ear out for neighborhood gossip too! If you hear about houses in your area being broken into, it might be time to step up security.

Keep your external home wiring under cover. You don't want your wiring to be obvious to the wrong types of people. Not only does it invite the risk of a criminal cutting your phones and electricity, it also is often something thieves seek out! Copper (often in wires) can be sold for a decent price.

Do not leave notes on your door for family members or people that are coming to service your home. You may think nothing of it, but it is letting everyone know that no one is inside. It is a good idea to give people a call ahead of time and give them instructions.

Do not list your full name in the phone book or on your mail box. This can give possible intruders a lot of information about you and allow them break into your home a lot easier. Instead, only list your last name and possibly your first initial, this is much safer.

Keep hedges and vegetation trimmed and away from doors and windows. Large bushes may look nice, but they provide easy cover for potential home invaders. If you can, try to keep an open area completely surrounding the perimeter of your home, and if you have vegetation, keep them well trimmed.

Make sure that your home security system has a backup power source. Many burglars cut wires inside home security systems before entering a home. If you have a backup source, the alarm will continue to work as it should. It may be more expensive to install this type of system, but it will be worth it.

Hopefully this article has clarified the questions you've been having about home security systems and you're ready to make the call. A solid home security system will protect you, your loved ones and all that you hold dear in this world. It will also give you peace of mind and let you sleep better at night.
