The Process Of Lawn Maintenance In Attica IN

By Colette Foreman

Lawn maintenance can be a tough job, but the results of well-maintained lawns are very attractive. In the first place, well-maintained lawns can raise market value of a property and beautify a home so much. Attaining a healthy lawn starts immediately after planting. Lawn maintenance in Attica IN is done by professionals hence clients do not need to worry about the quality of work.

Watering, pest control, fertilizing, mowing, aerating, fighting diseases, de-thatching, and weeding are some of the activities involved in the maintenance process. Watering is usually done first before the other events in most cases. Heavy watering is encouraged and must only be carried out only when the grass is in need of water. Most grasses do not do well with light frequent watering.

When watering is done heavily, the resultant root system is deep and extensive. According to the opinions of most experts, the water should be able to soak the soil up to a depth of 20 cm. The level and frequency of watering should however depend on climatic conditions and soil type in an area. The amount of water lost through evaporation can be reduced by irrigating during early mornings or late evenings.

Mowing is important in reducing the workload done by root systems. The work done by roots is reduced by less foliage, which requires reduced water and nutrients. Grass plant also expands when mowed frequently to the required level. Therefore the plant grows heavier and thicker. Thick and heavy growth helps in resisting diseases and weeds better. Frequent mowing should mostly be done during growing season. Only a third of the leaves should be chopped off when mowing to avoid ruining growth and health of the grasses.

The height at which the grasses are mowed should be varied with the season. For instance, in cold seasons, the grasses must be maintained at a comparatively lower height than in warm seasons. The mowing patterns should also be varied throughout the year. This means that the direction in which the mower is pushed must be varied between north-south and east-west weekly or every time mowing is done. The cut should be clean, meaning that the blades must be sharp always.

Fertilizer are meant for supplementing nutrients that the soil gives. Soil may be unable to keep up with the rate at which nutrients are absorbed by grass due to frequent mowing. Fertilizers can therefore offer the extra supply. Yearly application rate for fertilizer is one or two times. Slow-acting commercial granular fertilizers are the best choice. These forms of fertilizers are preferable because they continue releasing nutrients into the soil for months. This is different from water-soluble fertilizer types that deplete soon after application. Natural fertilizers can be used too.

Foot traffic and frequent mowing can cause the soil to get compacted. Too much compaction in the soil prevents oxygen from reaching microbes that help in breaking down organic matter that enrich soil. The compacted soil can be opened up by aerating it once in a while. Manual and power-core aerators may be used to achieve this better.

Moisture can be preserved by thatch in the grass. Too much thatch however does more damage than good by blocking oxygen and water from the roots. For that reason, the thickness of thatch should be kept below 6 mm at all times.
