All About Adult Board & Care Facilities

By Agatha Lebouef

There are many different types of eldercare, from assisted living communities to skilled nursing facilities to hiring in-home care or opting for a board and care facility. The board and care option also is sometimes called a residential care home or an adult family home. This option can be a good option for many senior adults who no longer can or wish to live alone. Here is a little bit of information about this eldercare option.

Board and care homes generally are located in larger residential homes and only have a maximum of about six residents at any one time. There is a staff member on site 24 hours a day, and sometimes several staff members. So if an emergency occurs or a resident needs assistance in the middle of the night, there is always someone there to help.

Although they do not provide nursing care, still the residents' daily tasks and chores can be assisted. Laundry and housekeeping, for instance is typically included in their monthly payment. Residents can be assisted by a staff member in terms of dressing, grooming or any bathing and toileting tasks. Residents should be guaranteed to have handicap accessible bathrooms equipped with safety bars other aids for easier day-to-day living. Even with medical care not inclusive of in a board and care home any resident can still avail of medication management. There is also meal service for them, and this includes three daily meals and usually some snacks.

Board and care homes can be an excellent option for a person who needs help with daily tasks, but still wants to live in a setting that is more personal and homey. Generally, this is a less expensive option than an assisted living community, but more personal and cheerful than a nursing home. Nursing homes often are the option for seniors because these facilities often take Medicare or Medicaid as payment, whereas board and care and assisted living facilities do not.

On the downside though, board and care can be with a lesser social environment compared to assisted living facilities and these places may be with lesser amenities. Residents are given their own private bedrooms however they can't be like apartments and studios as in assisted living communities. What makes this great though is the fact that with fewer residents come the higher probability of more personal attention and care given to residents. Still, you could actually find board and care homes with a variety of amenities and activities too.

Try and inquire about the experience level of the board and care homes you go to from each of their staff members. References from people you know may also help you in your search for the right board and care. Make sure you ask about the security features in each home you look into along with how clean the kitchen and common areas are. Talking to the residents will give you an idea of how content they are or how much they enjoy the facility they are in. Having more options would surely help you determine which home could be the best match for you or a loved one. San Diego board and care or Orange County board and care searches can be made easier if you try the service like Care Placement as this can match you with pre-screened homes apt for your budget and needs.
