Some Helpful Knowledge For People Who Are Caregivers

By Rue Nichols

You are not alone if you have an elder to care for or even your spouse, and this is fact. There are, in fact, more than 90 million seniors in the United States today, and while many of them are fully independent, many also need some level of care and help. The other spouse can be there to care or some of the children, and this is a form of eldercare service given. There are facts and information that can be of help if you are one of these caregivers.

There are times that the senior needs only little help like doing some household chores or driving to the doctor or attending a social event. There are also seniors who need more amounts of help for the day like bathing and grooming, dressing up or even help in going to the bathroom. Some seniors need caregiver presence the full day to ensure the safety and security of the elder.

While caregivers do want to help, there is no denying that taking care of another person has its challenges. Caregivers often have many other responsibilities, such as their own family and work. To lighten the load, it is wise to be willing to ask others for help. Often family members can help occasionally with various tasks. One child might be able to handle the grocery shopping, while another offers to clean the house. Sometimes hiring a part-time in-home caregiver can make life easier for everyone.

Another challenge faced by caregivers is taking care of a person who has some level or type of dementia. This can be extremely stressful and difficult to handle. Sometimes the person with dementia can even be violent or abusive. Sometimes even seniors without dementia can be difficult to handle and often the tasks of caregivers pile up to a point where one feels overwhelmed. Joining a support group can be extremely helpful as you can discuss many issues with people dealing with similar problems. They can offer advice and sympathy and help you to feel less alone. There are even online support groups that offer help and information for caregivers.

There are times when the big load of care giving can already be too much for the family. This is specifically true when an elder in the family has physical needs and limitations or have Alzheimer's disease or any form of dementia. This is a case where you may need options to consider. Skilled nursing facilities and nursing homes are available and they can handle elders needing full time nursing supervision. There are also those who can handle less medical supervision needed like the board and care homes and the assisted living facilities, and these are facilities who can handle elders with memory issues.

There can be help available, although looking for these eldercare facilities can be very difficult. Looking for those facilities that can match the needs of your elders and also within your budget is the goal, and this can be done using a placement service like Care Placement. Contact Care Placement immediately if you are looking for a San Diego assisted living community or assisted living facility in Carlsbad, or one assisted living in Del Mar or anywhere in San Diego County or in Orange County.
