Bladder Cancer Research Developments In The Medical World

By Miranda Sweeney

Bladder which is an organ located in the lower abdomen of the body is usually hollow in shape. It is normally stores urine. Urine is a bi product that is produced after blood is filtered by the kidney. Bladder cancer initially starts from inside the bladder and proceeds to grow into walls of the bladder. This ailment has killed many people which have prompted bladder cancer research.

Up to now, very big steps in research have being made by the many institutions which carry out research on this tumor. This among other institutions includes medical centers and also a lot of universities interested in this research. One of the recent issues which are still ongoing is creation of an understanding on various genetic changes that are found in bladder cancer. Researchers are also interested in knowing some differences between those cells that cause it and those that do not.

They also want to learn the influence of these differences in making these cells grow abnormally too much and spread to other various parts of human body. The research has found various changes in genetic material of cell that cause this tumor. The challenge now is determine whether these changes in DNA can help to predict the outlook of patients that might be affecting treatment.

Position emission tomography scan. This is an ongoing research that indicates that a PET scan can possibly find the spread of tumor better MRL or even CT. PET scan is able to create pictures of tissues and organs inside the body. It requires the injection of a small radioactive sugar substance in a body of patient. This sugar will be taken up by those cells that normally use more energy. Cancer will absorb more of the radioactive substance since it usually uses energy a lot more actively. The scanner detects this substance and will produce pictures. These images will show the inner part of the body.

Urine tests are being carried out to investigate the tumor. These tests are aimed at establishing the presence of any substance that can be of help in showing a person with such a tumor. These tests are helpful in trying to diagnose this tumor. Also this is aimed at looking for cases in which patients are getting this tumor even after being treated for the first time.

Another research is conducted in an attempt to help in the reduction of cases of recurring back of cancer after treatment. There is a common risk with people who has had tumor in that it may occur in different type of tumor within other parts of the urinary tract and also inside the bladder.

Studies want to establish if this risk can be reduced by use of a drug, certain foods or even any dietary supplements. Researchers also want to see if newer types of vaccines can boost the immune system of a body and probably lower the risk of the tumor coming back for a second time.

Lastly, there is target therapy. It focuses on genes, proteins and also tissue environment aiding the growth ant survival of cancer. This target to block spread of an already infected tumor cell and the damage they can cause to other cells
