The Basics Of A Good Poultry Fountain

By Ruthie Calderon

Having chicken at your backyard can be a very good idea to economically utilize your free space, but the cleaning and refilling of chicken bowls can be a tiresome job. Especially during summer times when the chicken need more water it can be a hard work to do. This is the reason why one should consider poultry fountain, they are easy to use and install, they always give clean water and finally they did not need any maintenance.

There are few things to be taken into consideration when making your choice, first ask yourself if you have enough space to install the system, where will your system be positioned, how will you feed the system with water, will your chickens access water easily and what will be your source of water.

Since the system has internal valves, they hold water and they are not well drained and stored in freezing conditions they result to malfunctioning of your system. The other solution is replacing these valves regularly. Leaving your system unattended during winter periods can damage it by causing it to crack.

Benefit of using this system include, there is less wastage of water, the structure is keep dry for longer periods of time and less labor is required. When using water nipple system you benefit in the following ways, the system is still functional during winter seasons and you can easily access water for you to add medication. The system can be hooked up with a garden hose to refill automatically, in this system water does not run out, it does not stagnate, get warm or grow algae. They provide fresh, cold and clean supply of water.

These fountains are considered common and are mostly used by people who rear chicken in small scale. The systems can be bought at pet shops, at feed stores and at poultry suppliers. They mostly use force of gravity to allow water into trays. Once the chicken drink water they cause the water level in the tray to go down and automatically causing water to be released back to refill the tray again.

They have small surface area so the young chicks are safe from falling in them and drowning to death. There limitations are, if not fitted on a flat surface they can leak. They also get your chicken floor mucky and encourage growth of sediments.

They glass is durable because of its toughness, it is less expensive, they are readily available, these jars have multiple uses and lastly they cannot drown the chickens. But they have their limitations because they can only be used to feed small chicks.

Its advantage includes being affordable, very simple to put up, it cannot be destroyed during winter season, buckets can be found almost everywhere and it is very useful during emergency times. Though they can be tiresome when you are rearing many birds, small chickens cannot drink from them because buckets are tall than their height and they are dangerous for small pullets since they face a danger of drowning.

The strength of a base of a chicken house determines the overall strength of the structure. The properties of the soil beneath the structure largely affect the strength of the base. Well drained soils with uniform bearing capacity are standard soils that are recommended in order to support the weight of the structure and the equipment to be installed.

The loads applied on the structure are eventually transmitted to the ground through the establishment of the poultry house. In choosing the type of establishment to put up one must consider the magnitude of the loads that will be applied on the structure. The soil should be well drained, free of organic matter and must have uniform bearing capacity. It should be compacted and must be able to withstand the stresses applied by the equipment and the structure itself with minimal compression.
