General Info On Earthquake Survival Kit

By Joanna Walsh

An earthquake is considered a natural disaster. It is marked by violent and sudden shaking of the ground. Depending on the severity of it, this even can cause major destruction. It is brought about by movements within the crust of the earth or volcanic activity. People are encouraged to have an earthquake survival kit available in the home and their car in case of emergencies. This is especially true for those who live in areas where quakes are more common.

Experts suggest that survivors of quakes and other natural disasters prepare enough to be self-sufficient for at least seven days. In the past, the recommendation was to have enough for at least three days. It is important that these kits are available so people can sustain themselves until help is available to them.

Specific supplies should be available in kits made for the home, office and car. At the house, it is fundamental that there is plenty of food and water available. The food should be in non-perishable packaging, such as cans. A manual-operated can opener should also be included. Water is also fundamental to survival. Plan to have at least one gallon of water available for every person in the household, and pet, for each day.

Reliable shoes, rain gear and clothing are key. Sleeping bags and blankets should be packed as well. If a person takes medications or needs prescription eyeglasses, these should both be added to the kit. A first aid book and kit are to be included in case there are injuries sustained during or after the quake.

People should have extra sets of keys available, for the home and car. It is also important to have a portable radio and flashlight, as well as extra batteries just in case. Feminine hygiene products, toilet paper and the toiletries are also necessary. Survivors are expected to have small change and cash available too. Necessities for the elderly or babies should be on hand in these house kits.

Other items to consider adding: shovel, crowbar and ax, small kit of tools, nails and hammer, candles or light sticks, foil, plastic utensils for eating, water purification kits, cheesecloth, fire extinguisher, necessities for pets, razor blades or knife, tarp, street map and compass, and wire and rope. It might also be helpful to have some entertainment options available, especially for families. Pens, stamps and paper can also be of aid.

The car is expected to include similar items, as well as plastic bags that can be resealed, towelettes, gloves, bottled water, and walking shoes. In the office, extra shoes for walking should be available. Orange juice or water, and dry food like crackers, jerky and candy bars are encouraged. Plastic bags, large and small, should also be available, as well as matches and many of the other survival kit recommendations.

It might be difficult to determine when and how severe these quakes will be. This is why preparation is important, especially for families. Severe quakes may lead to major destruction of structures and death or injury to people. These kits ensure that people have the basics for survival so that they can sustain themselves until professional help is accessible. There are manufacturers who sell kits that include basic supplies and necessities.
