By Zelma Hurley

The importance of protecting different plants from various hazards is very important. And if you are raising some of them for business, all the more reason why you have to spend time building some sort of support mechanism for them. For a plant as delicate as tomatoes, the need for support in their growth is highly necessary.

Good news is, you can do the entire process at home. By doing handmade tomato cages, you will be able to maximize the space that you have on the field. The cages allow tomatoes to grow vertically, rather than spread anywhere. With this you can place more of them in the limited area that you have.

Of course, there are also units that are readily available in the market. You can buy them easily if you want. But if you are planning to have many cages, then might as well created them at home and save money. As mentioned, the materials used for this are simple. When making some, you can start by thinking about the following.

Size of the cage. This is dependent to how big your tomatoes have become. For a safer choice, you can build something that is tall enough to cater its further growth. Measure the width so that the plant will have ample breathing area.

Material for caging. There are few options like wires, woods and plastics. There is nothing wrong with all of these. However, you may want to consider your own comfort when choosing one. Woods are more sturdy while plastic may be easier to construct. Wires can be bent, amking them flexible for adjustments.

Style or design. Cages come in different forms. You can go for the rectangular type which is a commond design if you are using wood. There is also the triangular or circular methods for wires. Some even provided plastic covered on the cage for protection during heavy rain. Choose something that you are comfortable working at and at the same time looks great.

Number of cages. Now since you are doing it by yourself, you can expect to spend some time working on it. The more cages, the longer the time. If you can ask a family member or a close friend to help you, the better. Do an inventory first on how many you need and secure the materials that will be used.

Maintenance. This is something that is often forgotten by a lot of home owners. But just like any other tools, the cages also need maintenance every now and then. Cleaning them after a rain for instance will remove those dirt away. Also, doing some regular check up on them will help you assess if there are some areas of the cage that needs repair.

Proper growth is vital for tomatoes. Placing them inside a cage allows you to save some space and use for growing another set. As an owner, weigh the options that you have to see which among the raw materials can easily be found at home. If you salvage some without spending anything, the better. Do not hesitate if you need assistance from others. Ask them to help you out.
