Luoping Yellow Canola Fields

By Jonny Blair

Luoping is a fantastic off the beaten track place to witness natural yellow Canola Fields in an unknown village called Jin Ji Cun. This part of China is remote and inspiring.

Most travel books don't even include Luoping when mentioning China's Yunnan Province, that's how this place manages to stay so unknown. These yellow Canola fields are everywhere in the Springtime near Jin Ji Cun village, close to the town of Luoping.

What are the Yellow Canola Fields in Jin Ji Cun?

This series of yellow fields are so coloured due to the flowers. The rapeseed harvest in Spring contains a load of yellow flowers adding magnificent colour to the region. It is used to make Canola Oil.

When to visit the Yellow Fields?

Please make sure you go there only in Spring. This is when the yellow fields are visible. The rest of the year they are not! A little bit of research pays off here - it's advisable to head sometime between February and April.

Getting to Luoping Yellow Canola Fields:

It's not entirely easy to get to, but make sure you first arrive in the city of Luoping. You can ask around at your hotel or show locals some pictures or Chinese characters for where you want to go. Most of them will know where it is. A bus will take you there within 20 minutes.

You pay on cash on the local bus, which is like a green mini-bus. The cost is 5RMB.

The bus will get you there in around 20 - 25 minutes and you will notice the yellow fields on the right hand side.

How much does it cost to visit the Yellow Canola Fields?

There isn't one. They are remote lonely fields in the Chinese countryside and wilderness. You just walk down the path to the fields and that's it - no charge whatsoever. Enjoy - IT'S FREE!!!!!

What can you do at the Luoping Canola Fields?

The yellow canola fields are simply there to gaze at and admire. There's a path you can follow which leads through a local market. Buy some local snacks such as potato, chicken and honey treats and enjoy the views!

For a great view you just climb up the small hills in and around the Canola Fields. There are lots of them and you will see other Chinese tourists there. There are paths up to the top for cracking views.

Once you've seen it, head to the village of Jin Ji Cun to get a place to stay for the night. The yellow canola fields are meant to look great at sunrise and sunset. When we visited, you couldn't see the sun at all, so it was just admiring the fields themselves!

Are the Yellow Canola Fields in Jin Ji Cun unique?

No - these yellow canola fields can be seen in lots of places including Australia, USA, Canada etc. But this is a really good off the beaten track location to see them, and it's extremely pretty, so I'd recommend it.

What else is there to do near the Yellow Canola Fields?

In terms of other things to do, trying the local food, visiting the 9 Dragons Waterfalls, checking out awesome views of the countryside and riding on a cart escorted by a yak are a few tips! There's also a hillside temple in the village of Jin Ji Cun and the local beer Lan Cang River met my expectations!
