Moving Across The Country As Painlessly As Possible

By Sarah Petrone

Moving can be a stressful endeavor, no matter the distance involved. Packing up and unloading somewhere new will always be a lengthy, involved process. And it can be even more complicated when you're moving to a new state. Usually, relocation is tied to a person's employment. They may be accepting a new job or accepting a transfer/promotion.

Once it's determined that you'll be relocating, you will need to start seriously looking for a new place. This process should be underway well before the date you need to move. Moving into an apartment, at least temporarily, is often a good idea when making a long-distance move. If you intend to purchase a house later on, you'll already have gained some familiarity with the new area, and can better search for a home without the pressure of a time constraint. Contacting a realtor to help you find a good place in the new area is a good idea.

A realtor can be very helpful during a long-distance move. They will help you find a new place, obviously, but they can also provide information about local schools and amenities. When you're trying to find a new place, you'd ideally want to be somewhere close to your employer your children's school. It can be a huge time and gasoline saver to be in close proximity to the places you'll be visiting the most. Realtors can also inform you of where the local medical facilities and entertainment areas are.

It is often a good choice to visit the area before going through with the move. You can get an idea of what the new area will be like and check out the housing available. Perhaps even meet some of locals who may become your neighbors and friends. Once the move is for sure, all that remains is getting ready to pack everything up and drive. In a cross country move, you'll want to make it as simple as possible by not bringing anything you don't really need with you. Most people dispose of what they don't want through garage sales.

There is always the concern of possessions being lost during the process of moving. Since that danger is present, you'll want to be sure that the most important things are secured. This includes the legal documents for you and your family, such as birth certificates, passports, social security information and financial records. Some utility companies even require that you show proof of payment on your previous utilities before they will be switched on in your new home. For this, you may need to bring utility bills or receipts.

Finally, when you've got everything sorted and prepared, the only step that remains is to load up the rented truck or trailer and hit the road.

When you have a good idea about what challenges you'll face, you can be more prepared to deal with them. And preparation is one of the keys to making sure a cross-country move doesn't add any more stress than necessary. It can even be an exciting prospect.
